In this low poly model ( game ) full workflow tutorial I will show you how to create a low poly model, create a UV layout for the model, export the UV, create a layered texture in Photoshop and export it back to Maya to apply it to the model.
First, open Maya LT:
- Object Mode -> Choose all objects
- UV -> Automatic
- Modify and arrange your UV shells with some methods:
- UV Distortion
- Cut UV Edge
- Move and Sew
- And others ...
- UV Editor -> Image -> UV Snapshot -> Name it "Something_UV"
Then, open Photoshop:
- Create a New File named "Something_Texture"
- Import the "Something_UV" file
- Back to the recently created file
- New layer -> Name it "UV Layer"
- Copy all from "Something_UV" to the UV Layer
- Move UV Layer down in Layer Window ( let "Layer 1" above the "UV layer" )
- Then, we 'll brush texture inside "Layer 1" only
- Finish? -> Delete the UV Layer
=> Boom! You now have a "Texture_Final" file.
Finally, back to Maya LT:
- Object mode -> Choose all
- Right mouse -> Assign new material
- Ctrl + A to open Attribute Window on the right
- Common material attribute -> Color -> Click "Checkbox" at the end of the color line section
- Choose File in list
- Choose the "Texture_Final" file just created in the previous phase
=> Wahla! You now have a beautiful textured model.
